Hi students!
Today, I want you to do the following:

Study the information given below:
-2 types of acid deposition:
Wet-acidic, fog, and snow
Dry-acidic gases and fly ash

-Acid rain occurs when sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) react in the atmosphere with water, oxygen, and other chemicals to form various acidic compounds.
SO2 + NOx H2O + O2 + other chemicals=Acidic Compound
-Burning fossils fuels like coal, natural gas, and oil to generate electricity
-Carbon monoxides which are released from vehicles
-Respiratory problems: dry coughs, asthma, headaches, eye, nose, and throat irritation (pollution)
-Severe brain damage or death (pollution)
-Alzheimer's disease (pollution)
-Damage man-made materials and structures
-marble, limestone, and sandstone can easily be dissolved by acid rain
-causes carvings and monuments in stones to lose their features
-pH level of lakes and streams affected (between 3-5)-destruction of marine life
-Destruction of plants, slower growth, injury or death of forests, loss of nutrients in foliage makes trees more susceptible to damage by other environmental factors.

Task:
Find information on acid rain, Alzheimer's disease, destruction of marine life and destruction of plants.

Ultraviolet Rays

What is Ultraviolet, UV?
Many people are interested in what ultraviolet is, how ultraviolet rays (or UV rays) work and how the UV light bulbs can be used for fly traps, flying insects, tanning beds and in sanitation programs. This article will go into a little detail that explains the ranges of the ultraviolet spectrum used in these different applications, especially pest management, light bulbs in fly traps and how flies and other flying insects are effected by UV light bulbs.
Ultraviolet topics covered:
• What is ultraviolet light?
• Why are insects attracted to UV?
• How does an ultraviolet tube or ultraviolet bulb work?
• How does UV-C kill microorganisms?
• Ultraviolet rays used in fly control, fly traps.
• Capturing flying insects that are attracted to UV rays.
What is Ultraviolet Light?
Ultraviolet light is not visible to the human eye, but can be found slightly to the right of visible light on the light spectrum.
Measured in nanometers, UV light has a wavelength lying between 100 and 400 nanometers in length.
UV is divided into three spectrums, namely:
UV-C, also known as Germicidal Irradiation, lies in the spectrum between 100 and 280 nm and is used for purification of air, water and surfaces.
UVB is used for tanning purposes and has a wavelength of between 280 and 315 nm.
UVA, sometimes referred to as black light/blue, lies between 315 and 400 nm and is used within insect control equipment.

Sex Education should be Taught at School

What is sex education? Sex education, which is sometimes called sexuality education or sex and relationships education, is the process of acquiring information and forming attitudes and beliefs about sex, sexual identity, relationships and intimacy. It is also about developing young people's skills so that they are able to make make informed choices about their behaviour, and feel confident and competent about acting on these choices. It is widely accepted that young people have a right to sex education, partly because it is a means by which they are helped to protect themselves against abuse, exploitation, unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS.

Researches have shown that many teenagers are sexually active. This has resulted in a lot social problems such as teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. Why is this so?? Teenagers are a curious lot. Sex education has traditionally been a topic that parents are uncomfortable with. Sex education is not compulsory in schools and many colleges do their best to ignore it. There are many questions in their minds that need to be answered. When these questions are not answered, they will find answers on their own; ie, without any guidance. I quote:
"Many children are sexually premature now. They are quite curious about sex and the parents' hesitant answers stimulate their curiosity. Remaining ignorant can be harmful to children's psychological and physical health."
This was said by Zhong Botian, secretary general of the Beijing's Institute for Sexual Health Education (ISHE).

Identity Crisis?

I came across an article about Malays who are trying to be Arabs. The article points out that Malays are ashamed of their own identity so much so that they would try to look like the Arabs by wearing clothes like the jubahs, and speaking like the Arabs, for example using 'ana' and 'anta' when they converse among themselves.

In my opinion, this identity crisis is more prominent among the chinese because the chinese have the tendency to use Christian names even though they are not. Why? Aren't they proud of their chinese names? Sometimes, they say that their names are Cindy, Anne or Patricia and they can't even speak proper english. I find this even harder to understand.

Starting a blog

I have started this blog about two weeks ago and having trouble maintaining it. The problem is to get the ideas on what to write. In this case the bloggers such as a.kadirjasin, sang kelembai, rocky, marina mahathir have never ceased to amaze me with their brilliant and never ending ideas to be posted in their blogs and here I am scratching my head for ideas. This really demands disciplines. The problem with me is that I have a wide range of interests; politics, social, battle of the sexes, and current issues. Everyday, without fail, I would spend at least two hours on my laptop going to these blogs because I have stopped reading the mainstream newspapers. The blogs are now my main source of information. My favourite blogs are rockybru, beritakmu, malaysia today, sang kelembai, kuda-kepang, rantings and agenda daily. I only read the newspapers whenever I can get them for free such as at a restaurant or my workplace. I usually spend about half an hour going through the newspaper.

English Proficiency Test

On the 10th of February, the Science and Mathematics teachers were required to sit for an English proficiency test. They were told that the test would consist of questions on basic grammar or vocabulary. They were in for surprise! The test was biased towards the science teachers because 70 percent of the questions tested the candidates on their knowledge in science. In the paper 2, only 6 marks out of 65 were allocated to questions on Mathematics. Now, I would say that the test was not valid. This is because if you are not teaching science, you can't answer the questions because you are not familiar with the scientific terms such as alveoli or oxy-homoglobin etc. The candidates who score below 50% have to go through a proficiency course which would concentrate on improving the teachers' grammatical skills. Then they have to be tested again. If there is no change on the components of the paper, these teachers will fail again and they have to go through another course. And these courses are not cheap, mind you!
